Hero Image: What It Is & Why It Matters

A hero image is the first image you (should) see when you land on a website.  It’s the most important photo because it sets the tone for the site and business.

Here are some things to consider when choosing a hero image...

Focus on feelings above all else.  This is the most important thing I can tell you when it comes to a hero image.  What feeling do you want your visitors to have?  What emotions does your brand evoke?  Find an image that contains that.

If you are a mindset coach who actively utilizes meditation and breathwork, a colorful and playful photo is not going to create the feeling of your business.  Instead a photo that feels calm and serene would be more fitting.

Your hero image is setting the stage for what people can expect.

On top of feelings and mood, you also want to make sure that your hero image actually works.  The image should be landscape.  It should not be too busy otherwise text and buttons won’t appear well (there are ways around this but you sacrifice the “punch” that your hero image should pack).  I also urge you to avoid overly stocky images.  A more natural photo that has more subtle emotion will serve you better and appeal to your audience more.  In general, stock images have a tendency to actually create the opposite emotion than the one they intend to.

Your hero image is the amuse bouche of your website and as such it should not be taken lightly.  Spend the time carefully thinking through your image options and deciding on one that resonates strongly and encapsulates your brand.
