Making Female Entrepreneur Friends

Community over competition.  This phrase is often circling around female entrepreneurship accounts.  And it’s a great phrase.  But what the heck are you supposed to do if you don’t have a community at all??

When I started my business, finding a group of female entrepreneurs sounded like a great idea, but I had no idea where to get started.  Flash forward to today, I am in many female entrepreneurship circles, I have a handful of close friends who are entrepreneurs, and a trough full of female entrepreneurs in my network.

So how’d I do it?

  1. I started making friends with my clients.
After the project was finished, I engaged with their content, DM’d them, and formed a friendship. I’d go get lunch with them, or do “co-working” sessions. Eventually, those friendships felt natural.

  2. I used the internet.
I have about 3 people that I met through Instagram that I would consider friends. I’ve never met them in real life, but I have gone to them with questions, asking for support, and celebrating wins. Finding likeminded entrepreneurs online can be a great resource so you feel less alone.

  3. I found collectives.
There are all kinds of female entrepreneurship networking groups, and probably some near you. I attended a few of these. As an introvert who is easily overwhelmed in a big crowd, I will say these are not my favorite. However, they’re a great way to get more connected. If you meet at least one new person each time you go, that’s a new potential friend (not to mention a contact).

  4. I joined a membership.
Being that the in-person is not my favorite way to connect—I’m more of a drinking coffee in bed chatting on Zoom kind of socializer—online memberships have really helped provide support. Often these memberships come with lots of structure which helps facilitate relationships too. Facebook groups are another alternative that is free, however I tend to avoid those because in my opinion they’re noisy and tend to lack connection.

As a female entrepreneur, you may feel alone, scared, confused, and unsure.  But you are not alone.  Please reach out for support and utilize the ideas presented in this blog.
