How To Grow Your Business: The Secret Sauce

Last week I cried about my business for the first time.  I felt like I was failing.  For awhile I’ve been feeling like I was missing something—the secret sauce—and I didn’t know where to find it.  I was consuming so much content; watching videos, reading blogs, listening to books… trying to find the secret sauce.  I knew there was a hole, but I didn’t know what it was.

So I finally gave in and tried journaling.  I have been so effin resistant to journaling because I always thought I couldn’t get my thoughts out that quickly.  I thought it would be boring and useless; “I can think my thoughts and process them.  Why do I need to write them down?”

But I did it.  I journaled.  And what I wrote actively shocked me.

I learned that taking up space and being loud are dangerous because doing that as a kid meant trouble.  Listening to other people is safe.  I learned that the best thing for me to do is to be good and quiet, to listen to others, and to not trust myself.

I realized that I was looking and searching for the answer from other people because that’s what kept me safe growing up.  But as it turned out, I needed to listen to me.  I needed to do the dangerous thing and hear my own guidance.

So I sat down, closed my eyes, and asked myself, “What do I need?”.

And the answer came to me…

Take a bath and read a children’s book. (more on children’s books later)

I put my phone on silent, I threw in a bath bomb, and I read my children’s book.  I didn’t think about my business, I just relaxed.

And do you know what happened?  I got out of the bath to find someone booked a sales call with me.  A completely cold lead booked a freaking sales call.  While I was in the bathtub.

At the end of the day, the best thing your business has that everyone else doesn't is you.

So if you’re looking for your secret sauce or the missing piece, odds are you’re forgetting to look in the mirror.  I am my secret sauce.  You are your secret sauce.
